Love is the most powerful thing of all

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love. I love everything. I care deeply about things. I care about the world and I care about people. Yet, most of the times, I can’t say I love people. I mean, I do but, sometimes, I hate them too. Which makes sense, considering my area of expertise (I’m a Criminologist) it’s all about what people are capable of. Unfortunately, people are evil, selfish and cruel. We are not born to be good, that’s why it’s so easy to make mistakes and do the wrong thing. Fortunately, some people still choose to be good. Yes, it’s a choice. And it’s a choice they make every single day and that is beautiful. It’s also the exact reason I still love people. During this Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak we witness people being selfish, emptying shelves in supermarkets without stopping to think about other people, that maybe they are taking way too much from people o might actually need it. We saw people being irresponsible by going out for drinks and even to shop for clothes or makeup, putting everyone else at risk, not caring if they could catch and spread the virus. We saw companies being greedy, refusing to close and send employees home because apparently money is more important than public health or containing a pandemic. We saw the very worst in people. But we also saw the very best. We saw people being kind and support one another. We saw people and some governments providing free food and water supplies to people who need it. We saw people donating ticket refunds to health care and medical experts coming together to fight the virus. We saw Italian people playing and singing on their balconies during quarantine, spreading feelings of hope, support and joy. We have people volunteering to take care of other people’s pets and to help the elderly by going to supermarkets to get whatever they need. We might still have bad people in this world (we will always have) and there’s still a lot of progress to be made, but all the good stuff that happened between people during this though times is beautiful and it is the definition of love. It’s a reminder that there’s still hope and that we can and should come together and make a difference in the world, one random act of kindness at the time. I’m proud to be on this planet and I’m proud of this people. So, keep spreading kindness – that’s the only way to beat this thing. Stay safe, stay home and do your part. Remember that love is the most powerful thing of all, WAY more powerful than this virus.
